Where did Bruce Laister and BC Accounting come from?

A biographical story

BRUCE LAISTER

Last Update 8 months ago

Bruce started out as a chiropractic student after finishing high school in Durban, South Africa. After some long and mentally straining years, he changed his career path in 2006. Although he did not finish the chiropractic course, he did meet his future wife, Carrie there.

IN 2006 he started at the University of South Africa (UNISA) doing a Bachelor of commerce degree. Later that year he was employed at a small auditing firm as the office admin clerk and delivery driver. At the end of 2006 he was accepted into the articles program at that firm and began a long journey to complete those articles.

Because he was still studying his degree, the ruling was that he would only complete his articles after 5 years. It was a very difficult and trying time for him but he managed to get through it. It was during this time that he was married to Carrie in late 2007 and began married life whilst studying part time.

In late 2010, he was granted completion of his articles and started a job in a Durban company as the accountant. The next couple of years were not comfortable professionally and as a result, he moved from one company to the next. This culminated in him getting retrenched 3 days after his daughter, Makayla, was born.

He spent the next 4 and a half months, unemployed and a stay at home dad. This remains a very special time in his life. He found a nice and satisfying yet challenging job in a local firm as the accountant and office manager in which he learned many skills and advanced his technical skills on computerised accounting systems.

He was approached by another local firm about 2 years later and took the opportunity. This was again a challenging environment but one that taught him many valuable lessons. It was here that he graduated with Bachelor of Accounting Science degree from UNISA. A proud moment for him. IT was also here that his son, Thomas, was born.

Unfortunately, he was retrenched in August 2015 and left the company. It was that day of 24th August 2015 that he formed his own accounting firm, BC Accounting Services (Pty) Ltd.

Over the next 9 years, he has helped many people and businesses in the SME sphere around the world. He is a member of the South African Institute of Tax (SAIT) and the Chartered Institute of Business Accountants (CIBA).

He joined the Maltix Ltd family as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in March of 2024 and has not looked back.
